Winter is the season of Netflix and Chill (in the literal sense, not in the context the kids are using it nowadays!) I love nothing more than lighting candles, snuggling up with a furry blanket, a glass of wine and little Colin, and bingeing on my favourites series’.
Here are my top Netflix picks at the moment:
1. Stranger Things
This supernatural thriller was on my watchlist for AGES, and Sam and I finally settled into it properly last night, and polished off the entire series! It’s a Netflix original series (which I think are some of the best) set in a small Indiana town in the 1980s. The central plot focuses on the hunt missing 12-year-old Will Byers, and a mysterious girl named 11. The child actors in this series are phenomenal, and the thrills and scares are perfectly balanced with witty one-liners. The hype surrounding this series is definitely justified and I really hope there’s a second season!
2. The Crown
This series was AMAZING. Based on the life of a young Queen Elizabeth II, The Crown explores Elizabeth’s ascension at the age of 25 following the death of her father – King George VI – and the trials faced by the young monarch. The casting in this series is perfect – particularly Claire Foy and Matt Smith as Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, and John Lithgow as Winston Churchill – and this series has everything from romance to tragedy to humour, and is entirely based on true events. I’d recommend this to everyone.
3. Pretty Little Liars
I swear this is the most frustrating but addictive series I have ever watched! Based on the books by Sara Shepard, Pretty Little Liars follows four high school girls whose friend – Queen Bee Alison – goes missing. Over the years the girls grow apart, but are pulled back together when an anonymous antagonist – simply known as ‘A’ – threatens to reveal their darkest secrets.
I am totally obsessed with this series, and am gutted that the next season (which airs in April 2017) will be the last…but also can’t wait for ‘A’s’ identity to finally be revealed! Plus, try getting the theme song out of your head after a couple of episodes..!
The true story of Pablo Escobar is not one I was familiar with prior to watching this series, but it’s totally fascinating. Narcos is a gritty drama that follows the rise and fall of Escobar – leader of the infamous Medellín drug cartel in Colombia. I am only half way through season 1 at the moment (there are currently 2 seasons available on Netflix) so am not totally up to date, but Sam has ploughed through both seasons already and is happily watching every episode again!
5. Orange Is The New Black
OITNB – based on the book of the same name – explores life and love in a minimum-security women’s prison. This is another series that has absolutely every base covered; it’s hilarious, touching, shocking and sometimes tragic, and is an absolute must-see! A fifth series has not yet been officially announced, but I really really hope this isn’t the last we’ve heard from the women of Litchfield Penitentiary!
